A Quick History of Snowmen in Art

Snowmen have appeared in art for centuries, with the earliest known drawing found in a 14th-century manuscript. In medieval Europe, snow sculptures were often playful—or even satirical—appearing during winter festivals.

By the 19th century, artists began illustrating the familiar three-ball snowman in winter landscapes and holiday postcards.

In the 20th century, characters like Frosty helped turn the snowman into a cheerful cultural icon.

Today, snowmen continue to show up in illustrations, holiday art, and even modern environmental sculpture, symbolizing fun, nostalgia, and the creativity of winter.

We’re going to take this iconic symbol and add a creepy twist to it, just for fun.

Evil Snowmen Sketch Practice

Starting with some quick practice sketching is a great way to get yourself warmed up and ready to do some cool drawings. And they’re really easy to do. Here’s how…

Then simply draw as many snowmen as you can in the given time.

Or, you can keep sketching until you run out of room on your paper. Just make sure you don’t spend too much time on this exercise.

It’s meant to be quick and you only need to capture the essence of the snowman. Don’t worry about all the extra details.

How to Draw Evil Snow Men Step by Step

I’m doing my evil snowman drawing on an artist trading card (ATC). But you can use any size and type of paper you want.

The easiest way to begin a drawing is with some basic shapes. So that’s how we’ll begin today.

Step 1: Basic Shapes

Start by drawing some circles for your snowman. You can use two or three. I like to use two.

Make the top circle slightly smaller than the bottom one. You can add in some contour lines too to give your drawing some depth and help with symmetry.

Finish by drawing a rectangle for his hat.

Make sure the size and position of your basic shapes are how you want them before moving on to the next step.

Step 2: Draw a Snowman

Now we need to start adding in the details for the snowman. Begin by drawing a carrot for the nose. Add some curved lines to show that it’s 3D.

Then draw his top hat and scarf. If you need help with either of these, check out the tutorials below.

Step 3: Make Him Evil

The eyes and mouth are the most important parts of the drawing to make your snowman look evil. So we don’t want to just draw button eyes and mouth.

For the eyes, make them more almond shaped like human eyes.

I like drawing pointed teeth inside an open mouth for my evil snowman drawings. But of course, you can draw yours however you’d like.

To finish up your drawing, add a couple of arms that look like sticks. And make them look like animated parts. As if he’s trying to grab someone. That will make him look even more scary.

Evil Snowman Drawing Outline

Before adding some color to your evil snowman drawing you need to add some ink to the outline. This can be done with a black pen or marker.

Your lines can be thick, or they can be thin. Or you could vary your line weights.

After you have your drawing inked you can use a block eraser to remove all the pencil lines and clean your drawing up.

Instead of using black for the outline you could try using another color instead. Maybe gray or blue would look good. Don’t be afraid to experiment and try something different.

How to Draw an Evil Snowman with Markers

Drawing with markers is easy and fun. The colors are so bright and vibrant they’ll make your drawing look even better.

I’m using alcohol markers for my evil snowman drawing but you can use whatever you have available for adding color.

When using markers if you use two or three variations of each color you can create some depth and make your drawings look less flat.

For the scarf, I used red and green. But I used a lighter marker and darker marker for each one. Begin by filling in a section with the lighter color. Then  add the darker color over top of that. You can add the darker colors around the edges or just on one side.

I like the variation to be subtle so I used two markers that were similar in value.

Do this for each color that you’re using for your evil snowman drawing.

For the areas that are white, use a light gray or maybe a light blue to add some shadows. You can finish up your drawing by adding in a background or a simple halo of color around the outside edge.

A white Gelly Roll pen can be used to add highlights.

Final Thoughts and Next Steps

Now that you know how to make an evil snowman drawing what’s next? If you want to get better at drawing you need to practice.

As I mentioned earlier, art and drawing are just skills that you can learn. The more you practice the better you will get.

Practicing for a few minutes each day is a great way to start and will help you develop a daily drawing habit. Try doing a series of drawings over the next week.
