About Graffiti Lettering
Graffiti lettering is more than just bold letters. It’s a form of visual storytelling that blends drawing, design, and self-expression.
Rooted in street culture, graffiti grew as a way for artists to develop their own style, experiment with shapes, and communicate ideas using letters instead of images.
Like calligraphy, typography, or hand lettering, graffiti turns everyday letters into art, showing that creativity doesn’t require traditional tools or formal training. Just imagination and practice.
Letter M Sketch Practice
Doing this quick sketch practice exercise is a great way to get warmed up.
But it’s also a good way to get familiar with the subject you’re going to be drawing and to work through some ideas and concepts.
And it only takes a few minutes to do. Here’s how:
- Get some paper and something to sketch with (pencil, pen, marker, etc.)
- Pull up some reference photos of the letter M
- Set a timer for three or five minutes
Then sketch out as many letter M’s as you can before the timer goes off.
Or you can keep sketching until your paper is filled and you run out of room.
Both ways are fine. Just make sure you keep things quick and loose. Don’t spend more than a few minutes on this exercise.
Step by Step Graffiti Letter M Drawing
Individual letters are a great way to practice using different colors and creating cool designs. I like using artist trading cards (ATCs) for mine. But you can use any size paper for your drawing.
Let’s learn how to draw graffiti m letters.
Step 1: Guidelines
When drawing anything, it’s easiest if you break it down into its simplest form. This applies to drawing letters as well. So that’s how we’ll be beginning our drawing today.

For lettering this means just drawing out your letter like you would if you were writing it as part of a word or name. But when you draw it out, think about how big you want it to be. And start to think about ways to make it more interesting as well.
As you can see, I drew my letter M slightly tilted to the right and that side is also a little longer than the left side.
Step 2: Make it Stylized
Now we need to give it some style and make it look cool. Use your guidelines that you drew and start adding some thickness to the letter.
When drawing your lines, think about how you could make some areas thinner and some thicker. Notice how my letter gets wider at the bottom and kind of flares out. And I intentionally made one side longer than the other.

Make sure you draw your lines lightly so you can play around with the shapes until you get something that looks good.
Step 3: Add Extra Details
Next, add any extra details you want for your graffiti letter M drawing. Or you can wait and add them in the next step with your outlining pen.
If you’re a beginner it’s probably a good idea to draw everything out with pencil first.
You can add some designs inside your letter. And add in some details for the background as well.
Inking your Graffiti M
Use a black outlining pen or a black marker to outline your graffiti M letter. I prefer to use a black outlining pen. The lines look cleaner than with a marker. But a marker will work too if that’s what you have available to use.

You can make your lines thick, thin, or you can use a combination of line weights.
I used the outlining pen to add a line around the inside of my letter M. And I also added some shapes inside my letter as well.

Adding extra details inside your letter can make it look more interesting. But it’s completely optional.
How to Draw Graffiti M with Markers
Markers are perfect for adding color to graffiti art. They are bold and bright. And come in a ton of different colors.
You’ll want to make sure you’re using alcohol markers for this type of art as well. But they are easy to find and readily available at most stores.
Start by choosing your color palette. I’m using gray for the inside of the letter, along with blue and pink for the background.
For the gray areas I did a color blend for the larger areas. Then I used darker grays to fill in the shapes.

Pink was then used to add the shape around the letter M. The background was then filled in with blue. I let the background dry before adding the darker blue lines.
A white Gelly Roll pen can be used to add highlights.

Final Thoughts and Next Steps
Now that you know how to draw a graffiti M, what’s next? Art and drawing are simply skills that anyone can learn. So the next step is to practice. The more you draw, the better you will get.
This doesn’t mean that you have to draw for hours every day. But you should try to build a consistent drawing habit where you practice for a few minutes each day. Ten or fifteen minutes every day will add up over time and you’ll see big results.
If you want to get better at using markers and drawing graffiti style letters, all you need to do is practice.
