The History of Hearts in Art
The heart symbol dates back to ancient times, possibly inspired by the silphium plant, linked to love and fertility.
In medieval Europe, it began representing romantic love in religious and courtly art. During the Renaissance, it symbolized both sacred and romantic love, especially through the Sacred Heart iconography.
By the 18th–19th centuries, hearts became common in Valentine’s cards and love-themed decor. In the 20th century, pop artists like Jim Dine and Keith Haring turned the heart into a bold, emotional symbol. Today, it’s a universal icon of love across art, media, and culture.
Hearts with Wings Sketch Practice
Doing a quick sketch practice exercise is a great way to warm up your drawing muscles and work through some ideas. It’s also a great way to learn more about the subject you’re drawing.
Here’s how to do it.
- Get some paper and something to sketch with (pencil, pen, marker, etc.)
- Pull up some reference photos of hearts with wings
- Set a timer for three or five minutes
Then simply sketch out as many hearts with wings as you can before the timer runs out. Or you could keep going until your paper is filled with drawings.
The idea is to keep your lines loose and quick. Even if you sketch until your paper is filled it should still only take a few minutes to complete this exercise. And the benefits are well worth the time you’ll spend.
How to Draw a Heart with Wings
When doing any kind of drawing, it’s easier to start off with some simple shapes and guidelines. This is the best way to get started so that’s what we’ll be doing for this drawing. I’m using and Artist Trading Card for this drawing tutorial.
Step 1: Draw Some Guidelines
Let’s begin by drawing a couple of small circles with a line in the middle.
The circles will help create a nice rounded shape for the heart. And the line will help guide us to the bottom point of the heart.

I like to make my hearts curve at the bottom, so I drew a curved line.
Check out this tutorial on How to Draw a Perfect Heart.
Step 2: Draw the Heart
Using the guides, draw the shape of your heart. You can change how your heart will look by changing the guides a bit. I like to have one side bigger than the other and curved at the bottom, so my guidelines reflect that.

You can also add a little style to your heart by overlapping the line at the top like I did. Don’t be afraid to play around with your drawing and have some fun.
Step 3: Add Wings
After you have the heart sketched out it’s time to add the wings. Start by adding some simple shapes for your wings to see how they will look.
For the left side, I made a curved teardrop shape. Then added in the individual feathers inside of that shape.

I like to draw the wings differently instead of making them symmetrical.

So for the right side I drew a shape that was sort of a teardrop with a line in the center. Then added in the individual feathers again.

Heart with Wings Drawing Outline
I’m going to be using markers to add color to my drawing so the next step is to add an outline.
I like to use a black pen for my outlines. But you can use whatever works for you and your artistic style.
You can make your outlines thick or thin. Or you could vary the line weight and use a combination of thick and thin lines.
You could also try using a color other than black. Gray or red would look good on a heart with wings drawing.

When you’re happy with how your outline looks you can add some color to your drawing.
How to Draw a Heart with Wings Using Markers
I’m using markers for my heart with wings drawing but you can use whatever medium you prefer.
I like to use two or three markers for each color. So instead of filling the heart in with solid red, I like to use a medium red, darker red or purple, and maybe an orange or yellow color.
This is an easy way to create some depth in your drawing.
For this drawing I’m using four markers for the heart. I started by adding some yellow to the top and bottom of the heart.
Next, I added some orange next to that and then used the yellow to blend the two colors together where they meet.
You have to work while the markers are still wet if you want them to blend together.
Then I added red and a purplish red to fill in the rest of the heart. Again using the lighter color to blend where they overlap.

For the wings I just used a couple of different gray markers. And of course, some color was added to the background.
A white Gelly Roll pen can be used to add highlights.
Final Thoughts and Next Steps
Now that you know how to draw a heart with wings, what should you do next? Since art and drawing are learned skills you’ll need to practice to improve.
The more you practice, the better you will get. Having a consistent drawing schedule is the best way to get better. Even if it’s just for a few minutes each day. I like to do a weekly drawing challenge.
