Teacup Sketch Practice

Doing a quick sketch exercise is a really good way to warm up and relax your drawing muscles. It’s also a great way to get more familiar with what you’re drawing.

And it only takes a few minutes to do it. When you’re finished, not only will you be warmed up, but you’ll also understand your subject matter better.

Learning to draw is really just learning to see. Most of the time we simply aren’t paying that much attention to what we are seeing. Instead, we draw what we think we see.

Here’s how you do a teacup sketch practice exercise…

  1. Get some paper and something to sketch with
  2. Pull up some reference photos
  3. Set a timer for three or five

Then sketch as many teacups as you can before you run out of time.

Another option is to sketch until your paper is filled and you run out of room. Just be sure to sketch quickly if you’re using this method.

How to Draw a Cup of Tea Step by Step

Learning how to draw a cup of tea is so easy and really fun. There are a ton of different shapes you can draw your teacups.

You could make them super elegant, or just an average cup of tea. The handles can be fancy or plain. They can be decorated or left blank.

Today we’ll show you step by step how to draw a cup of tea. From there you can do as many variations as you want because the process will be the same.

Begin by drawing a foreshortened circle. This is the opening of your teacup.

The more squished it is, the lower the angle. If you were looking straight down it would look more circular.

Now let’s draw the shape of the teacup. We’re going to keep it as simple as possible today to help you get started.

Next, add a base to the bottom of your teacup. This is optional and can be left off.

Then draw an oval for your saucer. It’s easier to draw the lines if you go through the teacup. Just make your lines light.

You can add a line inside the cup where the tea is by drawing a curved line that follows the shape of the cup.

If you want, you can add some extra details to the saucer. I thought it looked a bit boring. You can add some thickness to the edge of the saucer as well.

Teacup Drawing – Handle

Now let’s draw the handle. You can make it fancy or just a simple C-shape. I decided on a fancy handle just to make it more fun.

Then add some thickness to the handle.

You can add a tea bag to your drawing or leave it off. I think it looks cute with it added.

Draw some steam coming out of the top of the teacup.

Finish up your drawing by adding any decorations and additional details you want for your teacup.

Teacup Outline

Before we color our teacup drawings with markers we need to make an outline. You can use a black pen or marker, or another color if you prefer.

To make your teacup outline, simply trace over your pencil lines. But make sure you’re only going over the ones you want to keep.

You can make your lines thin, thick, or a variation of the two. Make your teacup outline however you think looks good. This will depend on your artistic style.

If you’re not sure what your style is don’t worry. It will develop over time with practice. The more you draw the more your style will develop.

How to Draw a Cup of Tea with Markers

Learning how to draw a cup of tea with markers is really easy. And hopefully you’ll have some fun doing it.

There’s only a few things you need to know about coloring with markers.

First, if you want to be able to blend your colors together you need to use alcohol based markers. Bic, Sharpie, and Copic for example. As well as many others.

Second, you need to work while the colors are still wet or they won’t mix together. This isn’t a big deal. Just make sure you work on a section at a time.

Third, you need to use colors that are similar to each other if you want to create a smooth transition of color. If your markers are too different they will leave a harder edge.

You can make your teacup whatever color you want. I think softer colors look better, but feel free to experiment with how you color them.

You can use a couple of lighter browns for the tea inside the cup.

And white can be added with a Gelly Roll pen.
