About Holly Leaves in Art

Holly leaves have been popping up in art for a really long time. Back in ancient Celtic and Roman times, people believed holly had protective powers and used it in winter celebrations like Yule and Saturnalia to keep away bad spirits.

Later on, during the Middle Ages, holly took on new meaning in Christian art. The pointy leaves came to represent Christ’s crown of thorns, and the red berries stood for his blood. You’d see holly in things like old manuscripts, church decorations, and tapestries.

Fast forward to the Renaissance and Victorian times, and holly started showing up in holiday cards, still life paintings, and home decor, especially around Christmas.

These days, holly is a go-to symbol for the winter season. It shows up everywhere from greeting cards and wrapping paper to digital art and festive patterns. It’s one of those timeless symbols that keeps coming back, year after year.

Christmas Holly Leaves Sketch Practice

I love doing a quick sketch practice exercise to warm up and start generating some ideas for what I’m going to be drawing.

And they’re fast and easy to do. Here’s how.

Then simply sketch out as many holly leaves as you can before you run out of time.

You could also sketch until your paper is filled. Either way is a good warm up, as long as you keep your lines quick and loose.

How to Draw Holly Leaves

The easiest way to start a drawing is with basic shapes and guidelines. So that’s how we’ll be starting this Christmas holly leaves drawing.

Step 1: Basic Shapes and Guidelines

Start with a few circles for the berries. This will be our central point of the drawing.

Then draw three lines coming from the cluster of berries. Make your lines slightly curved. I like drawing three leaves for my holly, but you can draw as many as you’d like for yours.

You can add another shape for the leaf. This might make it easier to draw the overall shape of it, but isn’t a necessary step.

Step 2: Sketch

Next, start adding in some details. Starting with one of the leaves, add some curves to the sides and a point to the end.

Do this for all three leaves.

Then add some lines to the inside of each leaf. You can make these straight or curved. I like using curved lines because it looks more natural to me.

Step 3: Details and Background

Finish up your drawing by adding in any extra details and a background if you choose to include one.

Christmas Holly Leaves Outline

Before adding color I like to outline my drawing with a black pen. You could also use a black marker or another color besides black.

You could make your lines thick or thin. Or you can vary the line weights. I like adding a heavier outline to the outside edge of my drawings and leaving the inside lines thinner.

There are a lot of different ways you could outline your holly leaves.

Just trace over the pencil lines you want to keep. Then use a big eraser to clean up your drawing and remove the pencil lines.

How to Draw Holly Leaves with Markers

The final step is to add some color. I used alcohol markers for my drawing. To begin, choose two or three markers for each color.

If you’re using three markers choose a light, medium, and dark value for each color. If you’re only using two, find a medium and slightly darker value.

Then start with one section of your holly leaves drawing and fill it in with the lightest color.

Then add the darker color where you want some shadows. Use the lighter marker to blend the two together where they overlap.

Do this again with the darkest color as well if you’re using three markers for that color.

Continue working on your drawing using this method to finish your festive work of art.

Final Thoughts and Next Steps

Now that you know how to draw holly leaves, what should the next step be? You can use your drawing to make greeting cards for the holiday season.

What I like to do is think of different things I could add my holly leaves to. You could add them to a top hat for a snow man. Or add them to a Santa drawing.

There’s so many different ideas you could come up with. I like doing a drawing challenge to see if I can come up with a new idea each day for a week. Give it a try and I think you’ll be amazed at how much you can improve in just a week.
