About Zettiology
This art form was originated by Teesha Moore where she would combine realism with fantasy. The result was usually something quirky, silly, and certainly, fun.
Although fun, Zetti art can quite often be very confusing as well. It’s common to see people with animal or insect parts. As well as pieces that are make believe entirely.
Often these artworks would combine black and white with bright colors. Traditionally, this type of artwork was done as an art journal exercise using cut pieces of paper.
But today we are going to use this Zetti art style as inspiration for our drawing.
How to Draw Zetti People
Step 1: Basic Shapes
Begin by using some basic shapes to lay out as guides for your Zetti art. Since we’ll be drawing a person today we can use a triangle for the body and a circle for the head.
I’m also using triangles for the arms, legs, and hat. Keep in mind this style is based on fantasy, not reality, so you can get as crazy as you want.
This is a good opportunity to make sure everything looks correct with the layout of your drawing. Make sure the placement looks good on your paper. And that the size is how you want it to be.
Step 2: Add Some Details
After you have your basic shapes drawn out you can use those as guides to start adding in some details.
You can refine the shapes for your hat, body, and head. Remember they don’t need to be perfect.
Draw a face for your zetti person by adding a mouth, nose, and eyes. Again, this is a fantasy drawing so it doesn’t need to look realistic.
Now you can add stripes, checkers, and swirls, along with anything else you can think of.
Step 3: Background Design
Finish up your drawing by adding a background. Or, leave that until the very end and add it last if you prefer.
Zetti Art Outline
Now it’s time to outline your Zetti style person. This can be done with a black pen, like I did for my drawing. Or, you can use a marker or a different color other than black.
The way you outline your Zetti art will depend on your own style. You can make your lines thick, thin, or a variation of thicknesses.
Just do whatever you think looks best. Or, experiment and try something new.
How to Draw Zetti Art with Markers
Zetti art is typically done with a lot of black and white elements with some bright colors added in. So for this drawing, I didn’t blend my colors.
Therefore, all I needed to do was fill in each section of color. I didn’t have the best selection of colors because I decided to challenge myself to use only a cheap set of markers.
The Zetti character turned out ok, but I would have liked to have used different colors than what I had for the background. But doing these types of challenges are fun and important for growth.
If you want to blend your colors, here’s how that’s done.
First, if you want to be able to blend your colors together you need to use alcohol based markers. Bic, Sharpie, and Copic for example. As well as many others.
Second, you need to work while the colors are still wet or they won’t mix together. This isn’t a big deal. Just make sure you work on a section at a time.
Third, you need to use colors that are similar to each other if you want to create a smooth transition of color. If your markers are too different they will leave a harder edge.
A white Gelly Roll pen can be used to add highlights.
Final Thoughts and Next Steps
Now that you’ve completed your first Zetti art drawing, what’s the next step? If you want to get better at drawing Zetti inspired art, draw as many of them as you can.
Challenge yourself to think outside the box and try new things. And don’t be afraid to make “bad art”.
A daily drawing challenge is a great way to get better at art and drawing.
