Simple Abstract Heart Drawing (No Experience Needed)

Easy Abstract Heart Drawing for Beginners

This abstract heart drawing tutorial will show you how to create a beautiful, beginner-friendly design using simple lines and soft color sections. If you’ve been looking for an easy abstract heart drawing idea that feels relaxing and pressure-free, this step-by-step guide is a perfect place to start.

In this tutorial, I’ll walk you through how to draw an abstract heart using flowing curves and easy shapes. You don’t need any special skills or experience. Just a pen, some paper, and a few quiet minutes.

This project is ideal for beginners because it doesn’t require perfect proportions or realistic shading. Instead, you’ll divide a heart into curved sections and fill each one with colors you enjoy. Every abstract heart drawing turns out a little different, which makes the process fun and creative.

Abstract drawing is a wonderful way to:

  • Practice drawing without worrying about mistakes
  • Relax and slow down for a few minutes
  • Build confidence with simple shapes and lines

If you’ve ever thought, “I’m not good at drawing,” this is a great project to prove to yourself that you can create something beautiful.

What is Abstract Art

Abstract art is a style of art that doesn’t try to look exactly like real life. Instead of focusing on realistic details, abstract art uses shapes, lines, colors, and patterns to create a feeling or design.

In abstract art, a heart doesn’t have to look perfectly realistic. It can be divided into flowing sections, filled with different colors, or outlined with curved lines, just like the drawing in this tutorial.

One of the best things about abstract art is that there are no strict rules. You can experiment with color combinations, line thickness, and shapes. Every drawing turns out a little different, and that’s part of the beauty.

Abstract art is especially great for beginners because it’s more about creativity and expression than getting everything “just right.”

How to Draw an Abstract Heart | Step by Step

I did my drawing in a small sketchbook that’s the perfect size for this type of drawing. If you’re going to use markers, you want to make sure the paper you’re using is appropriate for the medium. Which means it should be smooth and a heavier weight.

Step 1: Draw Your Lines and Heart

Begin by drawing wavy lines going across your paper in both directions with a black pen. Make sure you’re using a waterproof pen for this part of the drawing. I really like the Ohuhu fine line drawing pens.

Keep them roughly the same distance apart, but let them move closer together and further apart as they wave back and forth.

Next, draw or trace a heart somewhere on your paper. I drew mine near the center of the paper. And I made a template out of cardstock to make things easier.

If you make a template you can move your heart around your paper and decide where it would look the best. I like to position it where there aren’t a lot of tiny sections between the heart and the background.

Step 2: Round All the Edges

This step can feel a bit tedious, but is really very calming and relaxing. You want to transform all of the sharp edges into rounded edges. This is done by adding a curved line in the corners of each shape, and then filling it in with your black pen.

Do this for each of the shapes for both the heart and the background. Take your time and enjoy the process. While you’re rounding your edges you can thicken the lines or change the way the shapes look as well.

Rounding your edges is a common practice with neurographic art. If you want to learn more about this art form check out my Introduction to Neurographic Art.

Step 3: Add Color

Now it’s time to add some color. I used alcohol markers for my abstract heart drawing. I’ve recently fallen in love with Ohuhu marker sets. But you can use whatever brand of markers you prefer.

I used four different markers for the heart that were all pink or purple. And I used four different gray markers for the background. Choose whatever markers you feel would look nice for your own drawing.

*** Make sure you put a piece of scrap paper or some other type of barrier between your pages, especially if you’re working in a sketchbook. The alcohol markers will most likely bleed through onto the next page.

Fill in each of the sections with your markers. Try to not have the same color directly next to itself. You can color your abstract heart drawing in a pattern, or you can keep it random. I’ve done both and either way works fine.

Step 4: Add Shadows and Highlights

The next step is to add shadows to each section. To do this you can use the same marker and add more layers to the area you want to be darker. Or, you can use a different marker that is slightly darker.

Add your shadows to either the top or the bottom. And to the left or the right. I like to add my shadows to the bottom and the right of each shape. Then add your highlight to the opposite side of your shadows. I added mine to the top left of each shape.

Be sure to add your shadows and highlights to every section of your drawing.

Final Thoughts

I hope this abstract heart drawing gives you a few calm and creative minutes in your day. One of the most beautiful things about abstract art is that there’s no single “right” way to do it. Every set of lines, every color choice, and every little variation makes your drawing uniquely yours.

If your heart doesn’t look exactly like mine, that’s not a mistake,  it’s creativity.

The more you practice simple projects like this, the more comfortable and confident you’ll feel with your lines, shapes, and color choices. Small drawings done regularly can make a big difference over time.

Next Steps

If you enjoyed this abstract heart drawing, here are a few easy ways to keep going:

  • Try drawing another heart with a completely different color palette
  • Experiment with thicker or thinner lines
  • Fill your sections with patterns instead of solid colors
  • Draw multiple hearts on one page for a fun abstract design
