Vibrant Watercolor Paint Set Review
When learning a new medium it’s sometimes difficult to know where to start with purchasing your supplies. Today we’re going to look at a nice watercolor paint set for beginners. The Prima Tropicals set has beautifully vibrant colors that look amazing.
I purchased this set of watercolor paints quite some time ago and they’ve just been sitting in a drawer. So I figured it was time to try them out.

Prima Tropicals Color Swatches
When using a new set of colors, whether it’s watercolors or something else, it’s extremely important to create a color swatch card to use as a reference. It’s also a great way to start getting familiar with your colors.
So this is the first thing you should do. It’s really easy to do since there is a blank color swatch card included with the watercolor set. All you have to do is add the color in each section where it belongs.
This color swatch will come in handy when you’re painting and want to see what the color looks like when it’s dry.
The watercolor paint set comes with 12 different tropical colors of paint.
- 21 – pineapple
- 24 – Tiki
- 14 – Coconut
- 19 – Pitaya
- 17 – Hibiscus
- 22 – Sunset
- 16 – Parrot
- 23 – Ocean
- 13 – Island
- 15 – Hurricane
- 18 – Palms
- 20 – Reef
And everything fits together nicely in the compact tin, that also includes a mixing palette. This is nice for both storage and for taking it on the go.
The paints are artist-grade, high quality and highly pigmented watercolor pans. You can learn more about the company at https://www.primamarketinginc.com/.
Prima Tropicals Watercolor Paint Set Review
The watercolor set works great to make some galaxy paintings. As you can see in the variety of designs below, all of the colors look great. They are vibrant and easy to work with. And the colors included in the watercolor paint set work well together.
I love how bright the yellow is. It creates a nice focal point for the viewer to start at. Yet it doesn’t overpower the rest of the colors.
The Prima Tropicals watercolor set has excellent coverage and are so bright and vibrant. They are perfect for this type of painting. The pinks look warm and inviting. And they blend very nicely into the yellow.
The colors included with the set allow for some variety in value, even without mixing colors. Which I love, mostly because I’m lazy and I don’t always feel like mixing a bunch of colors.
Pros of the Tropicals Watercolors
- The colors are absolutely amazing and so vibrant.
- Compact and easy to store.
- There is a good variety of colors included in the set, which is extremely nice.
Cons of the Prima Tropicals Watercolor Set
The set doesn’t include black or gray. If you’re used to using a dark gray or black when you paint, this will take a little getting used to. However, there are some dark browns and a darker gray can be made with the available colors.
Or you can use some darker colors from tubes or another set if you have them. This is a pretty easy problem to work around.
The set is not all-inclusive for traveling. I’m used to using my Koi Travel Set when I’m not painting at home. So this makes it a little more difficult to travel with. But, the set is very compact so it doesn’t take up much room. If you are traveling, you will need to take extra supplies with you.
You can learn more about the travel set at, Koi Watercolor Field Set Review.
But neither of these things are a big deal, in my opinion. And it doesn’t claim to be a travel set.
Overall, I’m completely satisfied with my purchase of the Prima Tropicals watercolor set. I feel it’s a good set for the beginner who wants to learn how to use watercolor paints.
Learning to Paint with Watercolors
To learn how to do anything you’ll have to practice. The best way to learn how to use watercolor paints is to make several different paintings. If you spend a week doing a new painting each day, you’ll see big improvements in your skill level.
And they don’t have to be big paintings. I do most of my work on Artist Trading Cards because they’re small and quicker to complete.
