Learning How to Draw a Christmas Tree is Easy
Christmas trees can be different sizes. Some are tall and thin, and some are short and wide. And the decorations can vary a great degree. There are just so many options when it comes to drawing your Christmas trees.
Let’s get started at looking at the supplies that were used to make this drawing.

How to Draw a Christmas Tree – Easy Step by Step
Like usual, we will start by roughing in our basic Christmas tree shape. This is a triangle, of course. We often Use Shapes to Draw because it makes drawing complex objects easier.
Draw a small rectangle at the bottom for the trunk. Or, you could draw one of those fancy looking tree holders instead.
To make our Christmas tree a bit more interesting, we are going to add some different sections for the tree.
This is done by drawing in some additional triangles that overlap.
Overlapping is a technique used to show depth in an otherwise flat drawing.
This is a great opportunity to add your own style. There are many different ways you can draw out your sections of tree. Don’t feel like you have to follow mine exactly.
Add a star at the top of the tree.
And start drawing in some garland. Again, there are several ways to draw this. You want to make sure it looks like it’s wrapping around the tree.
This is easily accomplished by using a few techniques when drawing your garland. You’ll want to draw your garland on an angle.
Bring the ends out past the tree a little bit to show some thickness. This will keep your garland from looking flat.
You’ll also want to curve your lines to help make it look like it’s wrapping around the tree.
Drawing Christmas Lights
Now add some Christmas lights to your tree. You want to draw them in a similar way to how you drew your garland to make it look like they’re wrapped around the tree.

Next, draw in your Christmas ornaments to finish decorating your holiday tree drawing.
You can draw whatever you want at the bottom. I added some Christmas presents drawn in 3D to make them more interesting.
Finishing Your Christmas Tree Drawing
The next step will be determined by how you plan to finish your Christmas tree drawing. You could use a pencil to add some shading, which would look nice. But I prefer to use markers to give my artwork some color.
You could also use paint, colored pencils, pastels, or any other medium you like using.
Christmas Tree Drawing Outline
Because I’ll be using markers, I need to ink my Christmas tree drawing before adding color. This is one way of finishing your drawing. How you make yours will depend on your artistic style and how you like to work.
If you decide to ink your drawing, you’ll want to vary your line weight to make your drawing look more interesting. This is easily done if you know how to use a brush pen. But that takes a lot of practice.
You can also use a regular black pen and just make the line thicker in different areas of your drawing. This is easier to do when you’re lacking the skills needed to use a brush pen.
Using Markers to Color Your Christmas Tree Drawings
One of the things I always recommend is to use at least two colors for each section of your drawing. This helps to keep your artwork from looking flat and instead to show some depth.
I’ll be showing you how to use markers to color your Christmas tree drawing, but the concept works regardless of the medium you are using.
You can start with the largest areas, which would be the tree. Or the smaller areas, like the ornaments and other decorations. Either way is fine and is a matter of personal preference.
I like starting with the smaller areas first. I’m using Bic markers, which is my marker of choice. Any brand of markers will work, but you’ll need alcohol based markers for blending. If you need some help getting started, grab our Beginner’s Guide to Using Markers.
Before you begin coloring your decorations, decide if you want to stick with a small selection of colors or of you want a lot of different colors.
Again, it’s entirely up to you and what you prefer.
Fill all of your decorations in using at least two colors for each.
When all of your decorations are colored, move onto the tree. Use two or three greens to color in your tree, along with any other colors you want to add.
Finish coloring your Christmas tree drawing by adding in some white highlights using a Gelly Roll pen.
How to Draw a Christmas Tree Easy
There are a lot of ways you can vary your Christmas tree drawings. You can make your tree tall and skinny. Or you could make it curve.
You could also change the way your draw the sections of the tree. Or just draw one solid tree without any sections at all.
And there’s no limit to the decorations you could add. Try out some different ideas and see what you can come up.
