Castle Sketch Practice

Doing some quick sketches is a great way to warm up before drawing your castles. It will help you loosen up your muscles.

But it will also help you improve your castle drawings by getting yourself familiar with the shapes and proportions involved.

To do a castle sketch practice exercise you’ll need some paper, a pencil, and a timer. And you’ll probably want some photos to use as a reference.

Then just set the timer for three or five minutes. And then do as many quick castle sketches as you can before the timer goes off.

You can focus on individual components of the castles. Or the overall shape and design. There are so many different ways to draw a castle and this is a great way to start working through some ideas.

Another option is to do your castle sketches until your paper is full and you run out of room. If you use this method just be sure to keep your session under ten minutes. This exercise shouldn’t take a lot of time.

How to Draw a Castle – Easy Step by Step

So as I mentioned earlier, the easiest way to learn how to draw a castle is by starting with simple shapes.

For this drawing tutorial we’ll be making a simple castle drawing that has a main section in the middle with two towers. One on each side.

Step 1: Start with Basic Shapes

Let’s begin by drawing a square with two rectangles on the ends.

Then you can add a triangle to the top of each tower for the roof. There are a lot of different ways to draw the towers. Feel free to change how you make yours.

Now let’s add a door in the center of the main part of the castle. It can be helpful to draw a centerline to use as a guide to keep things symmetrical. But this is optional.

That’s it for the basic layout of our castle drawing. If you want to make any changes, now would be a good time to do that.

Step 2: Add Details for 3D and Texture

Now we want to start making things look 3D. Let’s start by curving the lines at the base of the tower roofs. Extend them slightly further than the sides of the tower to create a bit of an overhang.

Next, draw curved lines all the way down the entire tower. These are the lines we’ll use to draw our brick texture.

By adding texture to our castle drawings we can make them interesting to look at. There’s an entire tutorial on How to Create Texture in Art.

Now draw in the sections of brick. This can be done the same way you would draw a brick wall. Or you could make it look more random if you want it less uniform looking.

If you need more help check out our post on How to Draw Brick Walls.

Add a couple of windows on your tower. Keep the top and bottom lines curved with the bricks.

Repeat this process for the other tower.

Now let’s start working on the center of our castle. Draw the battlement along the top edge.

And then add some brick texture for the wall. You can also add a frame around the entry of the castle.

Finish up the details for the castle by adding some windows for the front.

You can add some trees or bushes at the bottom to help frame your castle drawing and make it look more natural.

Continue working on your castle drawing until you’re satisfied with how it looks.

Castle Outline

How you create your castle outline will depend on your artistic style. You can use a black pen, or any other color you think will look good.

I prefer using a black pen for most of my drawings. But you can do something different if you choose.

You can make your lines thick, thin, or a combination of the two. This can be done by starting with a thin line, and then making thicker where needed.

If you’re not sure how you want to make your castle outline try experimenting to see what you like. Your artistic style will develop over time as you practice and create more artwork.

How to Draw Castle with Markers

Learning how to draw a castle with markers is really pretty easy. And there’s only a few things you need to know.

First you’ll want to use alcohol based markers if you want to blend your colors together. And you’ll also want to work while the markers are still wet.

You’ll also need to use colors that are similar to each other if you want to create smooth transitions of color.

For this castle drawing three different grays were used. A light, medium, and dark gray. If you wanted a harder edge you could use just a light and dark gray.

But I like smoother transitions of color, so I used three shades of gray instead of just two. We go into more detail about this in our Marker Tutorial.

Use this same approach for each area of your castle drawing, including the sky and trees.

Final Thoughts and Next Steps

Now that you know how to draw a castle, what’s the next step? From here you should practice drawing more castles.

Art and drawing are skills that anyone can learn. And the more you practice the better you will get. Even if it’s only for a few minutes each day.

Not only will your art and drawing skills improve with practice, but your creativity will as well.

Try challenging yourself to a drawing challenge and you’ll see just how quickly you can improve.
