About Mushrooms

With approximately 14,000 species of mushrooms, there are a lot of options for how to draw them.

Mushrooms are also called fungi and toadstools. But the standard is mushroom.

Some mushrooms are edible and some are not. But for our purposes today, that really doesn’t matter.

Some mushrooms have stems, and some grow flat on the ground. For our drawing today we need to use a species that has a stem. But don’t feel like you need to draw your mushroom just like mine.

Mushroom People Sketch Practice

Doing a series of mushroom people sketches is a great way to warm up and brainstorm some ideas for your drawings. And they’re really quick and easy to do.

Here’s how…

  • Get some paper and something to sketch with (pencil, pen, marker, etc.)
  • Pull up some reference photos of mushrooms
  • Set a timer for three or five minutes

Then simply do as many mushroom people sketches as you can before the timer goes off. Or, you can do as many sketches as will fit on the paper before you run out of room.

How to Draw Mushroom People

This drawing was done on artist trading cards. They are a great way to save time and get more drawings done. Which means you will improve your art skills quicker. You can do your own drawings on any size paper though.

Step 1: Basic Shapes

Draw your mushroom first by starting with some simple shapes. You can use an oval or circle for the cap, and another oval or cylinder shape for the stem.

Starting with basic shapes is a good way to get over the blank page syndrome that many artists face. And it allows you to get the size and proportions worked out quickly.

Step 2: Refine the Shapes

After you have the rough sketch of your mushroom shapes finished, you can start to refine your shapes to make it look more like a mushroom.

I like to start with the top of the mushroom first and then work on the stem.

You want your mushroom person to have a bit of character so make your mushroom look as interesting as possible.

This can be done by adding some extra curves to the cap and making things slightly uneven. You don’t want a symmetrical mushroom.

When you’re finished with the top of the mushroom you can work on the stem. Keep your lines light and sketchy as you work out the details and refine your drawing.

Step 3: Add Details

When you have the shape of your mushroom completed, you can add in any extra details. This could be texture, spots, and of course the face, since we are drawing mushroom people.

You could also draw hands and feet for your mushroom person if you’d like.

Use reference photos of mushrooms for inspiration if you feel stuck coming up with ideas.

How to Outline Your Drawing

The next step is to outline your mushroom people. This can be done with a pen or marker. You can use black, brown, or another color for your outline.

I typically use a black pen for my outlines. But it’s always good to experiment and try different things.

You can make your outline thin, thick, or a variation of line weights. A brush pen is a good way to get some nice variation.

How to Draw Mushroom People with Markers

After you’ve outlined your mushroom personal it’s time to add some color. I used markers for my drawing but there are many other good options as well.

Here’s how to use markers to draw mushroom people.

First, if you want to be able to blend your colors together you need to use alcohol based markers. Bic, Sharpie, and Copic for example. As well as many others.

Second, you need to work while the colors are still wet or they won’t mix together. This isn’t a big deal. Just make sure you work on a section at a time.

Third, you need to use colors that are similar to each other if you want to create a smooth transition of color. If your markers are too different they will leave a harder edge.

For the black areas you can use an outlining pen or a black marker. But a pen is easier if your drawing is small. I used a pen for the mouth and eyes.

For the top of the mushroom I used red and a brownish red color. And then I blended the two colors together where they overlapped.

The stem was colored using a couple of different shades of yellow. It’s a good idea to use two or three different markers for each color. If you’re using three blue markers, for example, they would be a medium, a dark, and a light blue.

When you’re finished coloring your drawing you can add some color or a scene for the background. Blades of grass or maybe some trees would make a nice scenery.

A white Gelly Roll pen can be used to add highlights.
