Learn to Draw an Easy Crown
Art and drawing are skills you can learn and get good at, if you practice. The more you practice, the better you will get.
Working on your artwork every day is best. Even if it’s only for a few minutes a day. Don’t feel like you need to spend hours and hours creating art to improve.
And make sure you’re enjoying your creative time and keeping it relaxing. The more enjoyable it is, the more you’ll look forward to doing it.
Now let’s get our supplies and get ready to have some fun learning how to draw a crown.

Crown Sketch Practice
Doing a crown sketch practice session is a great way to warm up your drawing muscles and work through some quick drawing ideas.
It only takes a few minutes to complete. Here’s how it’s done:
- Get some paper and something to sketch with (pencil, pen, marker, etc)
- Pull up some reference photos of crowns
- Set a timer for three or five minutes
Then just sketch as many crowns as you can before the timer goes off.
Another option is to simply sketch until you run out of room on your paper.
Either method is fine. Just keep your lines quick and loose. Capture the essence of the crown. Don’t focus on all the small details.
How to Draw a Crown Step by Step
Learning how to draw a crown is really easy if you break things down into simple steps.
Step 1: Basic Shapes
The first step is to start laying out some basic shapes and guidelines. This not only makes things easier and less intimidating, but it also shows us what the overall drawing will look like before we spend a bunch of time on it.
Begin by drawing a foreshortened circle. This will represent the opening of the crown.
Then lightly draw out the overall shape of your crown. The point in the center should be taller than the ones on the sides.
This rough sketch will be used as a guide to draw the crown and add in the details. If you don’t like the size, shape, or placement of your crown, now is the time to make those changes.
Step 2: Add Details
The next step is to start adding in some details. Begin my refining the opening and adding the band above that.
When drawing the line for the band, make sure you curve it to match the line beneath it for the opening.
Now let’s start drawing the top part of the crown. We’ll begin with the ends to help get things in the right place. You can make these circles, ovals, points, or any other shape you think will look good.
Next, let’s start drawing the details for the crown by drawing lines that are slightly curved going from the top of the band to the ends, for both of the outside edges.
If you want to add some additional points to the crown, do that now by drawing the end shapes in between the ones that were already drawn.
Use the shape you drew at the beginning for your guide.
Draw a line coming down from the end shapes. This will help keep things symmetrical.
Now draw a triangle type shape coming from the center end shape. But leave the bottom edge open.
Then draw a line for the inside edge of the outer sections. Your lines can be straight, or you can make them curved. Just make sure you’re consistent with however you choose to draw them.
Next, draw the edges for the other two sections of your crown.
Now we need to add the back portion of the crown. Repeat the same process for the back of the crown.
Start with the end shapes, making them a bit smaller since they’re further back.
Then draw the edges for each of those sections.
By making the back half of the crown smaller we’re creating the illusion of depth. You can learn more about this in our tutorial on Space – an Element of Art.
Step 3: Add the Extra Details
The last step is to add decorations to your crown drawing and any extra details.
You can add some jewels to the main section of the crown.
Try adding some details to the band, like more jewels and some rings.
Finish up your crown by adding some thickness to the opening by drawing an additional foreshortened circle inside.
Crown Outline
Making a crown outline is really easy. All you have to do is trace over your pencil lines with a black pen or marker.
You can make your lines thin, thick, or a combination of line weights. Just do whatever you think looks good and fits your artistic style.
You could also use a color other than black to outline your crown drawing. You could try using brown, orange, gold, or any other color you might want to use.
After you’ve finished your crown outline you can use an eraser to clean up your drawing and remove any pencil lines.
How to Draw a Crown with Markers
Learning how to draw a crown with markers is easier than you might think. And there’s only a few things that you need to consider when using them.
First, if you want to be able to blend your colors together you need to use alcohol based markers. Bic, Sharpie, and Copic for example. As well as many others.
Second, you need to work while the colors are still wet or they won’t mix together. This isn’t a big deal. Just make sure you work on a section at a time.
Third, you need to use colors that are similar to each other if you want to create a smooth transition of color. If your markers are too different they will leave a harder edge.

For your crown drawing you can use any color combination you want. Don’t be afraid to experiment and have fun.
In the example below, yellow-orange was used for the base color. And a light orange was used for the darker areas.
For the jewels I used red, and then gray to add some darker areas. There are many other colors that could be used as well.
A white Gelly Roll pen can be used to add some highlights.
