About Sunglasses
There are tons of different styles of sunglasses. Color, size, shape, and quality are all characters that come together to make each pair unique.
Keep this in mind when you’re drawing your sunglasses. There are a lot of different ways to draw them.
Sunglasses Sketch Practice
Doing a sketch practice exercise is a great way to warm up and get familiar with what you’re going to be drawing. And it only takes a few minutes to complete.
Here’s how to do a sunglasses sketch practice session.
- Get some paper and something to sketch with (pencil, pen, marker, etc.)
- Pull up some reference photos of sunglasses
- Set a timer for three or five minutes
Then simply sketch out as many pairs of sunglasses as you can until you run out of time.
Another option is to keep sketching until you run out of room on your paper. Either method is fine. Just be sure to keep your lines quick and loose.
This would also be a perfect opportunity to work on some designs of your own, if that sounds fun to you.
How to Draw Sunglasses Step by Step
Step 1: Basic Shapes
Learning how to draw sunglasses is really easy if you start by breaking things down into basic shapes.
So let’s begin by drawing a rectangle that is roughly the size you want your finished drawing to be. I say roughly because this is just a guideline.
You can make adjustments as needed so don’t stress too much about this step.
Then draw a light line dividing your rectangle in half. And then draw two more lines on each side of that center line.
The space between will be the width between your lenses.
Step 2: Add Details
Next, start drawing the details of your sunglasses. I started by drawing the top edge and the shape of the sides.
Keep your drawing as symmetrical as you can, but don’t stress about it. Just do the best you can.
Next, draw the part that rests on the top of your nose.
Then draw the outside shape of one side of the frame. Keep in mind what the overall shape of your sunglasses is going to be.
Now draw the opposite side of your sunglasses, again making sure you keep it as symmetrical as you can.
Finish your drawing by adding the inside shape of the lenses. You want to keep the width of the frame the same all the way around.
Sunglasses Outline
Making your sunglasses outline is really easy. All you have to do is trace over your pencil lines with a black pen or marker.
You can make your outline thin, thick, or a variation of line weights. Just do whatever looks good to you. Don’t be afraid to experiment and try different things. Maybe use a color besides black.
Create your outline in whatever way fits your artistic style. If you don’t know what that is, don’t worry. Your style will develop over time with practice.
After you finish your sunglasses outline, use an eraser to clean up your drawing and remove any pencil lines.
How to Draw Sunglasses with Markers
Learning how to draw sunglasses with markers is really easy. And there’s only a few things you need to keep in mind.
First, if you want to be able to blend your colors together you need to use alcohol based markers. Bic, Sharpie, and Copic for example. As well as many others.
Second, you need to work while the colors are still wet or they won’t mix together. This isn’t a big deal. Just make sure you work on a section at a time.
Third, you need to use colors that are similar to each other if you want to create a smooth transition of color. If your markers are too different they will leave a harder edge.
Get in the habit of using two or three markers for each section of your drawing. Three different gray markers were used for the frames. I used a light, medium, and dark gray.
Even if you want your sunglasses to be black, you’ll still want to add in some other colors to make your drawing more interesting.
For the inside of the lenses there’s a lot of different options. You could make them black, semi-transparent with eyes, or reflective with a scene on them.
Of course there are many other options as well. I went with a beach scene for this example.
There’s a ton of different options for this as well. As you can see, there’s plenty of opportunity to make original drawings from just one main theme.
A white Gelly Roll pen can be used to add highlights.
