How to Draw a House Easy Art Tutorial

Whimsical House Drawing Art Tutorial

Today we’re going to learn how to draw a house easy, whimsical style. This is an easy to follow step by step art lesson that is great for beginners. These are the cute folk art style houses and they are really fun to draw and they look so cute when finished.

An the best part about drawing them is that they don’t have to be perfect. As a matter of fact, you really don’t want them to be perfect. They’re typically uneven, crooked, and lopsided. And that’s what makes them look so cute.

I’ll be showing you how to do this on an artist trading card (ATC). If you are brand new to ATCs, please take a look at How to Make Artist Trading Cards.

Let’s get started by looking at some supplies that were used for the whimsical house drawings in today’s tutorial.

How to Draw Folk Art Houses

The very best thing about drawing these houses, is that they do not have to be perfect. In fact, the less perfect they are, they cuter they will look. You can make your houses with rounded edges, bent frames, and crooked roofs. Use your imagination and draw your houses a little wonky looking.

To draw your house, begin by making a triangle for the roof.

Next, draw two straight lines down from the corners of your roof to represent the sides of your house. I should say draw two vertical lines, since your lines don’t necessarily need to be straight.

Then draw your roof lines going back into space. Your roof can go in either direction. Be sure to draw a line connecting your roof lines for the back edge.

After that, draw the far edge of the house down from that back edge of the roof. You can also draw the roof so it hangs over the edge of your house. Either way is fine, it just depends on the look you prefer. A good approach is to use a combination of styles with your whimsical art houses.

The final step is to connect your lines at the bottom edge of your house. That’s all there is to drawing the actual shape of the house.

Of course there are many variations to how you can draw your houses. And in my opinion, it looks better if you do vary your styles a little bit. I think it makes for a more interesting work of art.

Here are some examples of different types of houses.

How to Draw a House Easy – Windows and Doors

When drawing windows and doors on your whimsical art houses, you can make them uneven. There are several different ways to draw both.

You can draw them as a single line, or a double-line to show the frame.

Will they be square or tall and thin? Or maybe they will be round.

A window sill can be added, as well as curtains or other embellishments.

How to Draw Easy Roof and Siding Details

You can leave the roof the way it is, or you can add in some details for shingling. The same goes for the sides of the house as well. I think it looks good either way. But I will typically do a little of both to add some variety to my little towns.

Adding some texture to your drawings will make them look more interesting. When drawing whimsical houses you’ll want to keep your textures pretty simple. Don’t worry about trying to get too complex or detailed.

So now that you’ve drawn your first little whimsical house, let’s move on to making an artist trading card (ATC).

The very first thing you need to do, is to make (or buy) your artist trading card blanks. I prefer to make my own because it’s cheaper and I like to try different papers for my artwork. And making them yourself is really easy.

Since this type of whimsical house is not perfectly straight, I find it easier to begin by drawing in a rolling hill. Drawing a hill first will give you an uneven surface to follow for your houses. Begin by drawing your first house anywhere on the paper.

Continue adding houses until your artist trading card is filled up with crazy, whimsical houses. Your houses don’t all have to face the same direction. Some can be three-dimensional, and some two-dimensional. They can also go to the left and the right in the same drawing.

You can also add in bushes, flowers, or random shapes for fun. I drew my houses with pencil first and then traced over my lines with a black illustrator’s pen.

Finish your card by adding color to your houses, ground, and sky. I used Tombow markers for my whimsical houses ATC. You can use a variety of colors, or choose a few colors and stick to a color scheme. There really aren’t any rules when it comes to making these houses, and that’s why they are so much fun to draw.

The only thing left to do now, is to sign and trade your ATC.
