Whimsical Witch Drawing | Easy Step-by-Step Tutorial

Introduction

Want to learn how to draw a whimsical witch using simple shapes? In this easy beginner-friendly drawing tutorial, I’ll show you step by step how to create a fun and quirky witch character that’s full of personality.

This project is perfect for beginners because we’ll start with basic shapes and build the drawing one simple step at a time. You’ll learn how to create a whimsical character, add playful details, and develop a finished drawing without feeling overwhelmed.

Whether you’re returning to drawing after a long break or just looking for a relaxing creative project, this drawing tutorial is designed to be fun, approachable, and stress-free.

Why Whimsical Drawing Is Perfect for Beginners

Whimsical drawing is great for beginners because it doesn’t rely on perfect proportions or realistic details. Uneven shapes, oversized features, and slightly wonky lines can actually make the drawing more fun and full of personality.

That takes away some of the pressure to get everything “right.” You can focus on simple shapes, experiment with the details, and create a witch that looks completely different from mine.

How to Draw a Whimsical Witch

Learning to draw is really about learning to see. And the best way to see things more clearly is by breaking things down into simple shapes.

So that’s how we’re going to begin our whimsical witch drawing.

Step 1: Start with Basic Shapes

Begin by drawing a circle or a slight oval shape for the head.

Then draw a triangle for the body and another one for the hat that’s slightly smaller than the body. Add some rectangles for the legs and feet.

Step 2: Draw the Witch’s Hat and Face

The witch’s hat is the best part of the drawing, so have some fun with this part. Add some curves to the front and make sure it wraps around the back of her head.

You can add a band around the bottom with a buckle. And make sure you include the cute little curl at the top of her hat.

For the face, just draw it super simple with a couple of dots for the eyes. And then a curved line for the mouth.

Step 3: Draw the Body, Clothing, and Hair

Finish up your whimsical witch drawing by adding a dress. You can make it look kind of old and tattered. Or you can keep it cute and simple.

Add some arms coming down to her side with simple mitten type hands. And of course she needs shoes and socks.

For the hair, just add some long strands with curls at the ends.

Outline Your Witch Drawing

To outline your witch drawing simply trace over all of your pencil lines with a black pen or marker. Use your pen to fill in any black areas as well. Such as the stripes on the socks and the band on her hat.

I kept my lines fairly thin for this drawing but you can make them thicker if you prefer a bold outline.

You could also try using a color other than black.

When you have your outline finished, use a big eraser to clean your drawing up.

Add Color

Use your medium of choice to add some color to your whimsical witch drawing. I used color pencils for my drawing because I wanted a sketchy look to it.

If you’re new to colored pencils, Faber-Castell has a helpful guide to basic colored pencil techniques, including shading, blending, and layering.

Keep the color really simple and stick with the whimsical vibe of not needing to be perfect.

I used purple for her dress, but you could use any color of your choosing. Then I added a yellow-green color for the accents on her dress. Some brown for the hair. And black for everything else.

Ideas for Creating Your Own Whimsical Witch

The best way to take a drawing and make it your own is by doing multiple drawings of the same subject. The more you draw the same thing, the more you’ll learn about it.

It sounds like it would be boring but it’s really not. Once the ideas start flowing it becomes really fun. Think about all of the different things you could change.

Thinks like:

  • Add more details to the face and hair
  • Use different colors
  • Change the style of her hat
  • Add different backgrounds
  • Give her a pet or a cauldron

I love doing weekly drawing challenges. This is the one thing that helped me improve my drawing skills more than anything else.

Final Thoughts

There are so many different directions you can take this whimsical witch once you stop thinking of the tutorial as something you have to copy exactly. Even changing just one or two details can give the drawing a completely different look.

The more often you experiment with the same subject, the easier it becomes to come up with new ideas and make your drawings feel more like your own. So once you finish this version, try drawing another witch and change something about her.
