Characteristics of Frankenstein

Translucent yellow skin, black flowing hair, pearly white teeth, black lips, and watery eyes.

These are the original characteristics of Frankenstein’s monster, as it’s written in the book. Of course he’s been commercialized throughout the years and varies slightly from the description that was in the book.

But there are many characteristics of Frankenstein that we are used to seeing. Things like bolts, scars, green skin, tattered clothing, strong jawline, and square head with black hair.

How to Draw Frankenstein Step by Step

To begin drawing Frankenstein, we’ll start with basic shapes and guidelines. Draw a rectangle for his head, because that’s closer to the shape of this head than an oval would be.

And divide your rectangle in half both directions.

The line in the center is where his eyes will go. In the lower section, make a couple more lines to indicate where the nose and mouth will be.

Draw two circles for his eyes. Use the guideline down the center to position the eyes symmetrically on the face.

Draw in the pupils, and the nose. There are many different ways to draw both the eyes, and the nose. What I’m showing you is just one of the ways.

Frankenstein has a very heavy brow line. You can draw it with one solid line, like I did. Or break the line up and just have one over each eye. Again, there are many ways to draw this.

Draw the mouth, and the creases around the mouth.

That looks too much like a mustache… I’ll have to fix that later.

Next, draw the cheeks and the jaw. Keep in mind that Frankenstein has a wide, strong jaw.

Draw the top of the head, keeping it flat across the top.

Now draw in the hair. We are used to seeing Frankenstein with hair that is tight against his head. However, in the original description it says he has flowing hair. Which makes it sound like it was long.

If you drew your Frankenstein with long flowing hair, do you think people would recognize him?

Add a scar or two on his forehead.

And then begin drawing in the shoulders. He has very broad shoulders, so be sure to draw them that way. A scrawny Frankenstein drawing just wouldn’t look right.

Add in some ears as well.

For his shirt sleeves, make them look tattered and thorn.

Draw his arms, and add in any extra details you think your cartoon Frankenstein drawing needs.

Frankenstein Outline

Making your Frankenstein outline is really easy. All you have to do is trace over your pencil lines with a black pen or marker. This can be done using thin lines or thick lines. Or, you can use a combination of line weights.

You could also use a color other than black. Maybe try using green or purple for your Frankenstein outline. Just do whatever fits your artistic style.

When you’re finished with your outline use an eraser to clean up your drawing and remove any pencil lines.

How to Draw Frankenstein with Markers

Learning how to draw Frankenstein with markers is really easy. And there’s only a few things you need to keep in mind when adding color to your drawings.

First, if you want to be able to blend your colors together you need to use alcohol based markers. Bic, Sharpie, and Copic for example. As well as many others.

Second, you need to work while the colors are still wet or they won’t mix together. This isn’t a big deal. Just make sure you work on a section at a time.

Third, you need to use colors that are similar to each other if you want to create a smooth transition of color. If your markers are too different they will leave a harder edge.

So to draw Frankenstein with markers, you’ll want to use two or three different green markers. Or, variations of green. For example, yellow-green was used for his skin.

A white Gelly Roll pen can be used to add white highlights to your drawings.

Cute Cartoon Frankenstein Drawing

So what if you want your Frankenstein’s monster to be cute? Or a little less scary. The steps are the same, but this time start with a different basic shape for your guidelines.

Begin with a circle for the head, and a square for the body. And rough in where the hands and feet will go.

From there, follow the same steps as described above, but makes his features a bit softer. And much less intimidating.
