Beginner guide to learning to draw

Learn to Draw a Spider Web Easy Step by Step

Learning how to draw a spider web is really easy if you break things down into simple steps. Breaking things down into basic shapes and guidelines first will help you get started in a less intimidating way.

Step 1: Basic Shapes & Guidelines

Begin by making a small dot for the central point of your spider web. This is where the lines will meet, but it doesn’t have to be exactly in the center.

Next, draw some lines going from that dot to  the edge of the paper. You can start by adding lines going to each of the four corners.

Then add some lines between each of those four lines.

You can make as many, or as few, lines as you’d like. The number of lines you have will determine the size of the individual sections of your spider web.

Step 2: Add Details

Now you want to start drawing some curved lines that go between the longer lines. I like to work my way around in a circle. But you could do a section at a time as well.

Keep adding these curved lines for your webbing between all of your guidelines.

Continue to add those curved lines. You can make the spacing between bigger as you move toward the outside edge of your paper.

Spider Web Outline

Making your spider web outline is really easy. Simply trace over your pencil lines with a black pen or marker. You can make your lines thick, thin, or a variation of line weights.

You could also try using a color other than black. Maybe try blue, purple, or red.

Of course there are many other ways you can finish your drawings as well. Do whatever works best for you. Or try a variety of methods and see what looks the best. Do Whatever fits your artistic style.

Use a Pink Pearl eraser to remove any extra pencil lines and clean up your drawing.

I do most of my drawings on artist trading cards. It saves time, and money as well.

And if I decide to trade with other artists I ready have a selection of work available. If not, I can just hang on to them and store them in binders.

How to Draw a Spider Web with Markers

After you’ve finished outlining your spider web drawing you can add some color to your background. Learning how to draw a spider web with markers is really easy. And there’s only a few things you need to keep in mind when using them.

First, if you want to be able to blend your colors together you need to use alcohol based markers. Bic, Sharpie, and Copic for example. As well as many others.

Second, you need to work while the colors are still wet or they won’t mix together. This isn’t a big deal. Just make sure you work on a section at a time.

Third, you need to use colors that are similar to each other if you want to create a smooth transition of color. If your markers are too different they will leave a harder edge.

I like using markers but other mediums would work just as well. There are many different ways to add color.

You can fill in the entire background, like I did here. Or you can try just adding in some accent colors to your spider web drawing. A white Gelly Roll pen was used to add the white highlights.

This is another great opportunity to experiment and try different things.

Spider Web Drawing Ideas

If you want to improve your drawing skills and creativity, the best thing you can do is practice. I always recommend doing a 7 day drawing challenge where you do 7 drawings in 7 days.

It’s a great way to experiment with different compositions, color combinations, and outline variations. If you only try drawing a spider web one time, you’re not likely to want to try new ideas and your creativity will suffer for it.

Repetition is really good for developing skills and pushing your creativity. And using artist trading cards will help you save time.

You never know what ideas you can come up with unless you try it for yourself.
