Dragon Head Sketch Exercise
Doing a quick sketch session prior to your dragon head drawing will make things a lot easier for you. And it only takes a few minutes to do.
Since learning to draw is really about learning to see, doing this warm up exercise will help you notice things you may overlook otherwise.
The more difficult and complex a drawing is, the more beneficial doing quick sketches will be. So you really don’t want to skip this step when learning how to draw a dragon head. They can be pretty complex.
To do a quick sketch session all you do is set a timer for somewhere around 5 minutes and then do as many dragon head sketches as you can before the timer goes off.
You can pull up a page of reference photos and pick the ones you like. Sketch them out and focus only on the basic shapes, proportions, and basic details. Don’t try to capture everything.
You really just want to get the general idea of the dragon heads down.
Another option is to do your sketches until your paper is filled. Just be careful when using this method that you’re not getting hung up on all the little details. The idea is to do as many sketches as possible in a short amount of time.
How to Draw a Dragon Head Easy Step by Step
Learning how to draw a dragon head is really easy if you break things down into simple steps and shapes. This makes drawing them less intimidating and easy to follow.
With any drawing you want to start with basic shapes and guidelines. When learning how to draw a dragon head, this is especially important. They can be pretty intimidating to draw.
Start by drawing a circle with a cone shape at the bottom. Keep in mind you’ll need some room to add ears and horns.
Starting with basic shapes is a great way to get the placement on your paper right.
Next draw the brow line and a couple of circles for the eyes. How you draw your eyes will contribute to the overall feel of your dragon. You can make him look gentle or fierce.
Now draw the sides of the head and the nose. You can make the end of the nose come to a point, or you can make it rounded. If you’re not sure, try both. Draw it out lightly and make changes as needed.
Add in a couple of nostrils.
Then draw the bottom part of the mouth.
Next, draw the top of the head and the area where the horns will come from. There are a lot of different ways to draw the top of the head. Again, draw lightly and try different things to see what looks good.
Now draw the horns.
The next step is to draw the ears. There are so many ways to draw the ears. All of the different parts of your dragon work together to create the overall feel of your finished drawing.
Changing one thing can change the overall look and feel of your dragon head drawing.
I ended up going with some webbed ears for my dragon. Draw one of the ears, then do the same thing on the other side.
Add a neck to your dragon so you don’t just have a floating head.
Keep working on your drawing until you’re happy with how it looks.
Dragon Head Outline
To make your dragon head outline you can use a black pen, like I did. Or, you can choose to finish your drawing a different way.
When adding an outline, you can use thin lines, thick lines, or a combination of line weights. You could use a different color other than black as well.
How you finish your drawings will depend on your own personal style. If you don’t have an artistic style, that means you need to practice more. It’s something that will develop over time.
How to Draw a Dragon Head with Markers
Learning how to draw a dragon head with markers is much easier than you might think. And there’s only a few things you need to keep in mind.
First, if you want to be able to blend your colors together you need to use alcohol based markers. Bic, Sharpie, and Copic for example. As well as many others.
Second, you need to work while the colors are still wet or they won’t mix together. This isn’t a big deal. Just make sure you work on a section at a time.
Third, you need to use colors that are similar to each other if you want to create a smooth transition of color. If your markers are too different they will leave a harder edge.
When drawing with markers you’ll want to use two or three colors for each section. This will help create the illusion of depth in your artwork.
For example, for my dragon head drawing I used a pinkish purple, a light purple, and a medium purple.
The lighter colors can be used to blend the colors together.
You can apply the same technique with colored pencils, paint, or any other medium. Avoid filling in your drawings with one solid color.
Highlights were added using a white Gelly Roll pen.
