About Graffiti Lettering
Graffiti lettering is an expressive and dynamic art form characterized by bold, stylized letters often created with exaggerated shapes, vibrant colors, and intricate details. Originating from street art culture, it allows artists to showcase their creativity and individuality. Graffiti lettering can range from simple tags to elaborate designs, blending elements of calligraphy, typography, and urban art to create eye-catching compositions.
Graffiti A Sketch Practice
Doing this quick sketch practice exercise is a great way to warm up your drawing muscles. It’s also the perfect method for getting familiar with what you’re drawing and quickly work through some design ideas.
Here’s how to do it…
- Get some paper and something to sketch with (pencil, pen, marker, etc.)
- Pull up some reference photos of graffiti letter As, or graffiti lettering in general
- Set a timer for three or five minutes
Then simply sketch out as many graffiti letter A’s as you can before you run out of time.
You could also continue sketching out your letters until you run out of room on your paper.
Either way is fine, you just need to keep your lines quick and loose.
The goal for this exercise is to work on how you want your letter to flow. And practice some design ideas.
How to Draw a Graffiti Letter A
When drawing anything, including letters, it’s a good idea to start with some basic guidelines. So that’s how we’ll start today.
Step 1: Guidelines
When drawing your graffiti A guidelines, you’re going to make your letter similar to how you would when handwriting something out.
But this time make it bigger, and more interesting. Use this step to get the design and flow of your letter established.
You want your letter to be interesting to look at so think about how the lines curve and flow. Also take into consideration how the parts of the letter can overlap other areas of the letter.
Step 2: Sketch
Next, sketch out the thickness of your graffiti letter A following the guidelines that you drew. Draw lightly and make corrections as you go.
Keep working on your sketch until you’re happy with how your letter A looks.
Make adjustments to the thickness of your letter. Make some areas wider and some thinner. This will make your drawing more dynamic and interesting. You can also make one side of the letter longer than the other side like I did with mine.
Step 3: Add Final Details
Finish up your sketch by adding any final details or extras.
You can also add a background design before moving onto the next step. Or, add the background at the end.
Graffiti A Outline
After you’ve finished sketching out your graffiti A you can add an outline using a black pen. You can make your lines thick, thin, or a combination of line weights.
Simply trace over your pencil lines with your pen. You could also use a black marker. Or try using a color other than black.
You could add a drop shadow to your letter as well. Or you could make it 3D. There’s a lot of different ways to make your letters.
How to Draw a Graffiti A with Markers
After the outline is finished it’s time to add some color. I used markers for my drawing but any medium will work.
Begin by choosing two or three markers for the inside of your letter A. I’m using blue today so I picked out a light, medium, and dark blue marker to use.
Start filling in your graffiti A with the lightest blue. Then use the medium and dark blue to add some lines and accents.
You could also make a graduated fade with the makers. Or simply fill them in with one solid color.
There are a lot of different ways you could use color to make your letters more fun and exciting. And working on individual letters is a great way to experiment and try new ideas and concepts.
Working small helps to get more practice in as well. I like making my drawings on artist trading cards (ATCs). They are a great time saver and perfect for practicing new techniques and ideas.
Finish up your drawing by adding some color or designs to your background. Have fun with it and don’t be afraid to experiment.
A white Gelly Roll pen can be used to add highlights.
