Drawing Basic Shapes and Forms

Whenever possible it’s best to start your drawings with some basic shapes, or forms. The difference between the two is that a shape is flat and forms are three dimensional.

I prefer to draw in 3D because I think it makes the drawings more interesting to look at. But it does add a level of difficulty not everyone is ready for.

I’ll show you both ways today and let you decide. If you’re not comfortable drawing in 3D you’ll want to consider working on developing this skill.

It may not be quite as difficult as you might think.

Two Dimensional Boombox Drawing with Shapes

You can draw a really basic boombox by using a rectangle and then a U shape for the handle.

Once you’ve got your basic shape drawn out you can start sketching in the details such as the speakers and the tape deck. And don’t forget the station bar at the top.

There are a lot of different ways to draw in all the details of your boombox. For example the speakers could be drawn many different ways.

Make a few different drawings of your boombox. A simple and quick way to do this is by making them on Artist Trading Cards. Whether you want to trade them or not. It’s a good way to practice your drawing and art skills.

Three Dimensional Boombox Drawing Using Forms

If you want to make your drawings more exciting, then you need to learn how to draw in 3D. This is easily done by using forms as your guidelines instead of flat shapes.

To start out your boombox drawing you’ll want to draw a cube shape. This is done by drawing a rectangle and then adding some parallel lines going to the back.

If you need more help with this we have a full step by step drawing tutorial on How to Draw Cubes. But the secret is keeping your lines parallel to each other.

After you have your basic forms drawn out, add in your details just like you did before.

Do several drawings if you want to get really good at drawing a boombox. Repetition not only improves your drawing skills, but it also helps your creativity flow.

Even if you just do a bunch of quick sketches. Which is actually an extremely beneficial exercise to do.

You could draw out as many different boombox drawings you can in say 3 or 5 minutes. Then pick out the ones you like best and refine them more and turn them into a finished work of art.

Boombox Outline

After you’ve got your sketch all drawn, and you’re happy with how it looks, use a black pen to go over your pencil lines.

You can add some shadows and scratches with the ink pen as well.

If you’re drawing a graffiti boombox you’ll want to make your lines a little bolder. Or you can use whatever style you’re used to using to outline your drawings.

When you’re finished with your outline, add some color using markers or another medium of your choice.

Graffiti Boombox Drawing Step by Step

So what’s the difference between drawing an old school boombox and a graffiti boombox? It’s all about attitude.

Your graffiti boombox should be more stylized and interesting to look at. There are many ways that this can easily be accomplished.

One way is to curve your lines and add some flare to the shape of your graffiti boombox. Experiment with the shape and use your imagination.

The next thing you’ll want to do is add in some graffiti accents. These are the things you’d normally see in typical graffiti art.

Things like paint drips, bubbles, and arrows. Take a look at some graffiti paintings to discover what elements are commonly seen.

From there you can add to the style by the way you outline your drawing and the colors you use.

Art is fun. Let it be fun and enjoy the process. Don’t overthink it. You can always draw another one. And you should. The more you draw something, the better you’ll get at it.

Boombox Drawing with Markers

The final step is to add color to your drawing. Markers work really well for this.

When using markers to color your drawings be sure to use at least two colors or shades of a color for each area. This will add depth and make your artwork more interesting to look at.

Don’t feel like you’re limited to only using black and gray. Experiment with your colors and have fun.

You can also add some highlights with a paint pen or white Gelly Roll pen.

Adding a background is optional but finishes off your drawing into a finished work of art.
