How to Draw Bone Lettering Step by Step

For this lesson we’ll focus on drawing cartoon bones. The concept is pretty close if you wanted to draw more realistic bones, but cartoon bones are looser and more fun to draw.

Like always, you want to start with basic shapes to use as your guidelines.

Start by drawing a long, narrow rectangle with a line through the middle. Add two circles at the ends, one on each side of that center line.

This is your basic bone shape.

Start drawing your cartoon bone by replacing the long lines of your rectangle with the edges of your bone.

These lines don’t have to be perfectly straight, or symmetrical. It actually looks better if they’re not.

Next, draw the ends. To do this, draw a curved line that wraps around the end of your circle.

Then draw another curved line around the other circle on that end of your bone.

Notice how the lines overlap. By overlapping your lines your artwork will have more depth and look more interesting.

Do the same thing for the other end of your cartoon bone.

Clean up your drawing by erasing your unneeded pencil lines, and add some shading.

If you’ve seen any of our other lettering tutorials, then you already seen this process before.

Begin by drawing your letter. For this example I’ll be showing you the letter A. This initial drawing of your letter will serve as your guide, similar to using shapes to build your drawings.

Choose a line to start with and draw your bone guidelines over that line. The line of your letter will become the center line of your rectangle.

Follow the same process as described above for how to draw a cartoon bone. Notice how the ends of the bone in this drawing have sharp edges. This is a more stylized way to draw bones.

Either way is fine, just make sure you stay consistent throughout your drawing.

Repeat the process for the other side of the letter. The top of the letter A will overlap.

Finish the letter by drawing the bone for the middle line of the A.

Bone Lettering – B

But what if your letter isn’t straight? What about letters with rounded parts, like the letter B?

Let’s take a look at how you would draw a letter B bone letter.

When drawing your guidelines you’ll need to make all your lines straight. So your B would look like this.

Then you follow the same process as you did for the letter A.

Here is an example of what it would look like if you made the word “Dream” out of bones. Add a halo around the letters, some clouds and a brick wall. And you have yourself a cool graffiti drawing.

The initial sketch of the lettering layout would look something like this. If you’re doing a graffiti style drawing, you’ll want to make sure your letters overlap. If not, you can keep them spaced apart more.
