Scorpion Sketch Practice

Doing a quick sketch session prior to your actual drawings is a great way to get warmed up and familiar with your subject matter.

Here’s how to do a scorpion sketch practice exercise…

  • Get some paper and something to sketch with (pencil, pen, marker, etc)
  • Pull up some reference photos of scorpions
  • Set a timer for three or five minutes

Then quickly sketch out as many scorpions as you can before the timer goes off.

Another option is to just sketch until you’re out of room on your paper. Just be careful that you don’t get too hung up on all the little details. Keep your sketches quick and loose.

Doing a scorpion sketch practice will help you get familiar with the individual parts of them. You’ll learn a lot about what you’re drawing in a short amount of time.

How to Draw a Scorpion Step by Step

Learning how to draw a scorpion is easy if you break things down into simple steps. Like with all of our drawings, we’re going to start with some basic shapes.

Begin by drawing an oval for the main part of the scorpion’s body.

Then add a couple of circles where the pinchers will go. And some lines for the legs and the tail.

This will give you a good representation of the size and placement of your scorpion. This is where you’d want to make any changes, before too much time has been spent on the drawing.

Now we need to start drawing in the details. Draw a curved line for where the head will go.

Then draw the shape of the head, the eyes, and the mouth parts.

Next, start drawing the sections of the abdomen, beginning with the first section behind the head.

Then add each section making them smaller as they go towards the tail of your scorpion.

Add a curved line at the bottom of the abdomen for the belly area.

Now start drawing the sections of the tail, using the guideline you drew earlier.

Continue drawing the tail until you get to the length you want it to be. Then add a stinger at the end.

Next we’ll draw the pincher and legs. Begin by drawing the pincher first. This will make it easier than drawing the leg first.

Then draw the leg sections from the pincher back to the body.

Now we’ll draw the legs. Each leg has several individual sections to them. They actually have many more than what I drew, but you can take artistic liberty with your artwork.

Continue working on adding all of the legs.

To finish up your scorpion drawing, add the other pincher. Then draw the leg to connect it to the body.

Before moving on to the next step, make any adjustments you want to make to your drawing.

Scorpion Outline

Making your scorpion outline is really easy. All you have to do is trace over your pencil lines with a black pen or marker.

You could use a color other than black as well. Maybe try using red or brown. Experiment and try out different ideas that you have.

When making your scorpion outline you can use thin lines or thick lines. Each will give your drawing a slightly different look to it.

You could also vary your line weights to make your drawing even more interesting.

Just do whatever looks good to you, which will depend on your artistic style. If you don’t know what your style is, you need more practice.

When you’re finished with your scorpion outline, use an eraser to clean up your drawing and remove your pencil lines.

How to Draw a Scorpion with Markers

Learning how to draw a scorpion with markers is much easier than you might think. And there’s really only a few things you need to keep in mind when working on your drawings.

First, if you want to be able to blend your colors together you need to use alcohol based markers. Bic, Sharpie, and Copic for example. As well as many others.

Second, you need to work while the colors are still wet or they won’t mix together. This isn’t a big deal. Just make sure you work on a section at a time.

Third, you need to use colors that are similar to each other if you want to create a smooth transition of color. If your markers are too different they will leave a harder edge.

It’s a good idea to use a scrap piece of paper to try out your markers before adding them to your scorpion drawing.

And try to avoid using one solid color on your artwork. This will make it appear flat and boring.

If you want your scorpion to be black, use gray instead. You can use some black. Just don’t use only black.

For this example, I used two different gray markers for most of the scorpion drawing. Lighter grays were used for the belly.

There are a lot of other options as well. You could add in some blue or purple to the body. Or use an entirely different color scheme.

A white Gelly Roll pen was used to add in some highlights.

Add a background to finish up your scorpion drawing.
