How to Draw an Alien Step by Step
Learning how to draw an alien is really easy if you break things down into easy shapes and steps. And since we like keeping things easy and fun, that’s what we’ll be doing today.
As usual, let’s start by roughing out our alien drawing with some basic shapes.
To keep it simple start with an oval. And add in some guidelines for where the eyes, nose, and mouth will be placed.
By adjusting the placement of the facial features you can change how your alien will look. Aliens have large foreheads, so feel free to over exaggerate that feature.
Next, add some eyes to your alien drawing. Make them large in relationship to the overall size of the head. And draw them at an angle.
When drawing your alien’s nose keep it simple. All you need is a couple of small indications for the nostrils.
Now draw a mouth for your alien. You can make this simple as well. Or you can draw it a bit more detailed. The choice is yours and either way is fine.
Next draw the shape of your alien head. Again, there are many different ways to draw the shape of the head. Learning how to draw an alien, like anything else, is about making choices as an artist.
Don’t be afraid to experiment and try different ways. Using Artist Trading Cards is a great way to get several drawings done in a short amount of time.
And the more you practice the better you will get. It really only takes a few minutes a day to improve your drawing and art skills.
You can add a neck and body to your alien drawing so you don’t just have a head floating on the paper. Aliens are typically seen with long, thin necks.
Add in some extra details like wrinkles and lines for the chin and shoulder bones. Add any additional details you feel your alien drawing needs.
Alien Outline and Coloring with Markers
Use a black outline pen to add an outline to your drawing. You can use a thin or a thick pen depending on what your personal preference and style is.
Erase your pencil lines when you’re done adding your outline.
How to Draw an Alien with Markers
Learning how to draw an alien with markers is really easy. And there’s only a few things you need to keep in mind when using them.
First, if you want to be able to blend your colors together you need to use alcohol based markers. Bic, Sharpie, and Copic for example. As well as many others.
Second, you need to work while the colors are still wet or they won’t mix together. This isn’t a big deal. Just make sure you work on a section at a time.
Third, you need to use colors that are similar to each other if you want to create a smooth transition of color. If your markers are too different they will leave a harder edge.
You can color your alien with smooth transitions of color, or with hard edges. Either way is fine, just follow what your style and mood is.
Finish up your drawing by adding in a background and some white highlights using a Gelly Roll pen or another method for adding white.
Alien Head Drawing Step by Step
Now let’s look at a similar drawing, but with a slightly more complex face shape. Just to show you an example of how you can make small changes to draw several different aliens.
Again begin by drawing the basic shape for the head. This time start by drawing a circle and then adding a triangle for the jaw.
Next, draw eyes for your alien. Also add in some lines for where the mouth and nose will go.
Add the nose and a mouth to your alien drawing. Remember to make your drawing as detailed as you want it to be. You can add more, or less detail than what I’m showing you in the step by step tutorial.
To draw the shape of your alien’s head, begin by drawing the area around the eyes.
Draw the rest of the head by adding the chin, cheeks, and the forehead.
Alien Head Outline
Outline your alien head with a black pen or marker, making your lines as thick or thin as you like them to be.
Varying your line weight will make your alien drawing look better as well. But that might take you a bit of practice to get it looking right.
Don’t forget to erase your pencil lines.
And then add your colors and a background. Finish up by adding in some white highlights and stars. Check out our tutorial on How to Draw a Galaxy with Markers for a step by step on how this background was made.
