About Easter Peeps
Peeps Bunnies are a popular Easter candy made by the Just Born company. They are marshmallow treats shaped like bunnies and covered in colorful sugar.
Peeps were first created in the 1950s, with the original Peeps being chicks, but the bunny shape was introduced later. The company initially produced Peeps by hand, but as demand grew, they developed a manufacturing process to mass-produce them.
Peeps have since become an iconic Easter treat, with various shapes and flavors introduced over the years. You may love them, or hate them, but chances are you know what they are.
How to Draw Peeps Bunnies for Easter
I’m doing my drawing on an artist trading card (ATC), but any size paper will work. ATCs are great for saving time and making a series of drawings.
Step 1: Basic Shapes
Whenever possible, it’s best to begin your drawings with some simple shapes. This allows you to get the basic elements of your drawing sketched out before putting too much time and effort into it.
For our Peeps bunny, we need to draw a circle for the body. Then a smaller oval for the head. And then a couple of triangle type shapes for the ears.
This is the point where you want to make any corrections to the size or positioning of your bunny. If something isn’t quite right, now is the time to fix it.
Step 2: Rough Sketch
If everything looks good, you can start refining your Peeps bunny drawing by making it more detailed.
This means making the triangles look like bunny ears. And making sure the body and head look like a Peeps bunny.
Step 3: Add Details
After you have the shape of the bunny drawn out and you’re happy with how it looks, the last step is to add a face and anything extra you want to add. You could also do this after you color in your Peeps bunny drawing.
You could add some clothing to your bunny. Make a silly face. Or a surprised face. There’s no limit to how you could finish your drawing.
Peeps Bunny Drawing Outline
After we’ve finished your Peeps bunny drawing, we need to add an outline so we can get it ready for color.
I used a black pen for my outlines. But you could also use red, pink, purple, or another color. It really depends on the look and style you’re going for.
You can make your lines thick, thin, or a combination of line weights. Again, this will depend on your own style. Using a brush pen would be a good option as well.
How to Draw Peeps Bunnies with Markers
For this drawing I used markers, but any medium will work. If you’re going to be using markers for your drawing there’s a few things to keep in mind.
First, if you want to be able to blend your colors together you need to use alcohol based markers. Bic, Sharpie, and Copic for example. As well as many others.
Second, you need to work while the colors are still wet or they won’t mix together. This isn’t a big deal. Just make sure you work on a section at a time.
Third, you need to use colors that are similar to each other if you want to create a smooth transition of color. If your markers are too different they will leave a harder edge.
Begin by filling in the bunny shape with the lightest color. I’m using light pink. If you’re making a larger drawing, you’ll want to work in smaller sections to make sure the alcohol doesn’t evaporate before you have time to blend your colors.
Then add some darker areas with a pink that is slightly darker than the first marker. Where the edges overlap you can blend that area with the lighter pink or a colorless blender.
Keep working back and forth with your markers until your Peeps bunny drawing is colored in. If you didn’t add the face and other details earlier, do that now.
After you’re finished with your drawing, you can add a background, or leave it blank. I like adding backgrounds to my drawings.
A white Gelly Roll pen can be used to add highlights.
Final Thoughts and Next Steps
Now that you made your first Peeps bunny drawing, what’s the next step? If you want to improve your drawing skills you need to practice.
The more you practice, the better you will get. This doesn’t mean you have to practice every second you have free. But you do need to be consistent. Try to make time each day to work on your art skills. Even if it’s only for a few minutes.
Try doing a series of drawings and work small to save time. This is a great way to develop your skills, and improve your creativity.
