How to Draw an Owl Eye

Owl Eye Sketch Practice
Doing some owl eye sketches is quick, easy, and extremely beneficial. It not only warms up your drawing muscles, but it’s also a great way to get familiar with your subject matter.
It only takes a few minutes to complete a sketch practice session. Here’s how to do it.
- Get some paper and something to sketch with (pencil, pen, marker, etc)
- Pull up some reference photos of owl eyes
- Set a timer for three or five minutes
Then just do as many owl eye sketches as you can before you run out of time.
Another option is to just do as many quick sketches as you can before you run out of room in your paper.
This is a great exercise to help you see better. Most of the time we only think we know what we’re seeing. But in reality we are making a lot of assumptions.
So when you do your quick sketches, really look at what you’re drawing. Capture the essence of what an owl eye looks like.
Owl Eye Drawing Step by Step
Learning how to do an owl eye drawing is really easy if you break things down into simple shapes.
We’ll start by drawing a line for the top of the eye. This line can be drawn straight or at an angle. Your owl eye will have a different look to it depending on the angle of this line.
Then draw a circle for the eyeball. Keep in mind that the top part of the eyeball will be covered up.
Next, draw the shape above the eye and start adding some fur texture.
Now draw the outside edge of the eyeball and add the pupil. The top of the pupil will be covered up as well.
Then add an outside ring around the shape of the eyeball.
The rest of the owl eye drawing will be adding sections of fur. Add some fur texture to the left side.
You can add the beak to your drawing or you could fill that area in with fur.
Draw a curved line to indicate where you want the next section of fur to be.
Then add your fur texture along that line. There are many different ways you can create a fur texture. Don’t be afraid to try different things.
Fill is the area you just create with some additional fur. This can be done randomly.
To finish your owl eye drawing fill in the large spaces with more fur texture.

Owl Eye Outline
Making an owl eye outline is really easy. All you need to do is trace over your pencil lines with a black pen or marker.
You can make your lines thin, thick, or a combination of line weights. Or you can try using a color other than black.
How you choose to make your owl eye outline will depend on your artistic style and personal preference. If you’re not sure what your style is, don’t worry.
Your artistic style will develop over time with practice and repetition. The more you practice, the more your style will develop.
When you’re finished with your outline use an eraser to clean up your drawing.
Owl Eye Drawing with Markers
Learning how to make an owl eye drawing with markers is much easier than you may think. And there’s only a few things you need to keep in mind.
First, if you want to be able to blend your colors together you need to use alcohol based markers. Bic, Sharpie, and Copic for example. As well as many others.
Second, you need to work while the colors are still wet or they won’t mix together. This isn’t a big deal. Just make sure you work on a section at a time.
Third, you need to use colors that are similar to each other if you want to create a smooth transition of color. If your markers are too different they will leave a harder edge.

For your owl eye drawing you can use brown, gray, and black for the fur. And yellow, brown, and orange for the eyeball.
You could also experiment with completely different colors altogether. Maybe try blue or purple.
A white Gelly Roll pen can be used to add some highlights or white fur.
