Skateboard Sketch Practice

Doing a quick sketch session prior to your drawings is a great way to warm up, and get familiar with your subject matter.

To do a skateboard sketch practice exercise, grab a piece of paper and something to draw with. Then bring up some reference photos on your phone or computer. And set a timer for three or five minutes.

Then do as many quick sketches of a skateboard as you can before the timer goes off. Don’t worry about spending a lot of time on any one sketch.

Skateboard Sketch Practice Exercise

Just get the basic size and shapes down. And get familiar with what a skateboard really looks like.

You could also do your quick sketches until you run out of room on your paper. Just be careful if you’re using this method to not spend too much time on this exercise. It still should only take a few minutes to complete.

How to Draw a Skateboard

The first step in learning how to draw a skateboard is to lay out some basic shapes to use as our guidelines. A skateboard is really just an oval with four cylinders on the bottom of it.

So let’s start with the oval. This will represent the deck of the skateboard. There are many different angles you could draw this from. And today we’re going to show you a couple of them.

Like with most of our drawings, we’re going to start with some basic shapes. A skateboard is a long oval shape. Draw a couple of straight lines to indicate where the wheels will go as well.

How to Draw a Skateboard Using Shapes

Now we want to start refining the shape of the skateboard. Draw the back of your skateboard so it curves up a little bit. Feel free to exaggerate it if you want, which will make it look more cartoonish in style.

3D Skateboard Drawing

Next let’s add a 3D edge to the side of the skateboard. Drawing things in 3D will make them look more interesting.

The next step is to add some wheels, so draw a couple of rectangles for the hardware that the wheels mount to.

Then draw a circle for your first wheel, with a smaller circle inside of that. The wheels on a skateboard stick out slightly from the deck. So draw your circles right at the edge.

Now, turn your circle into a cylinder to create some depth. We have an entire tutorial on How to Draw Cylinders if you need some practice with this.

Finish up that set of wheels by drawing the other wheel and adding some details to the hardware.

And then repeat that process for the other set of wheels.

If you want, you can sketch out a person on the skateboard. This helps make the skateboard drawing look more complete. Instead of having a floating skateboard.

You could also add some cool designs to your skateboard as well. Maybe add some flames to the bottom, or even coming off the skateboard itself, like it’s going really fast.

We have a full tutorial on How to Draw Flames as well.

Another option is to draw the skateboard from above. The process is exactly the same, and we’ve included the pictures in this video.

Skateboard Outline

Before we add color to our drawings we need to make our skateboard outline.

I like using a black pen for this, but you can use whatever you want. You can make thin lines, thick lines, or a combination of the two.

Varying your line weight can make your drawings look more interesting.

You could also use a different color other than black. Try some different ideas out and see what looks good to you.

How to Draw a Skateboard with Markers

Now let’s add some color to our drawings. Learning how to draw a skateboard with markers is fun and easy. But you could also choose a different medium as well.

How to Draw a Skateboard with Markers

The important thing to keep in mind whether you’re using markers, colored pencils, paint, or anything else, is to avoid using one solid color.

Instead, use two or three colors for each area to create depth, and make your drawings more interesting to look at. This can be done using gray, or a different color.

For example, if you’re making your skateboard red, you could use a light red and a medium red. Or a medium and dark red. You could also use all three to create a range of values.

Another option would be to use gray, or another color, to add some shadows. This may be an easier choice if you decide to add some graphics to the skateboard.

Final Thoughts and Next Steps

Now that you know how to draw a skateboard, what’s the next step? Well, from here you need to practice. And the more you practice, the better you will get.

If possible try to spend some time on your artwork everyday. Even if it’s only for five or ten minutes each day, you’ll start to see improvements.

Of course you should do more than that if your schedule allows for it. Maybe challenge yourself to do a series of skateboard drawings. It will help your creativity as well as your art skills. And there’s all sorts of designs and ideas you can come up with for your drawings.
